I think a lot of people are jealous or resentful of teachers who get snow days. It’s always easy to point a finger and accuse people who look like they “have it easy.” Actually, there are many instances in my own life that I can remember pointing the “easy” finger. I used to think that stay at home moms had it easy. I thought that people who sat in offices staring at a computer monitor all day had it easy. I thought my dog walker had it easy. But when I really think about it and reflect on the word “easy,” I think about moms who want to tear their hair out because they’ve been cooped up all day (or all week) with small children. I think about my husband in his former office job, working his hardest only to get nowhere. I think about walking my own dog and how insane she becomes when she sees a squirrel and I remember how much I dread walking her myself.
I will admit, I do still think there are some people who have it easy. I’m not going to be unrealistic and claim that our burdens are equal, because they most definitely are not. I will tell you that the vast majority of people you encounter on a daily basis don’t have it easy. OK? OK. In the past twenty four hours I’ve done my fair share of lesson planning, paperwork, and emailing. I’ve been able to do so from the comfort of my own home, which is fortunate, so maybe I’m lucky in that regard. But I will tell you, if you ask any teacher what they did with their “day off,” they will gladly provide a laundry list of items that were completed. Snow days are great because they provide an opportunity to complete work that otherwise would have had to wait until the weekend. Do you realize how much time teachers spend preparing, grading and emailing on the weekend? If you have ever known or been married to a teacher, I’m sure you understand.
So, as the snow keeps falling and you feel tempted to point that easy finger, consider checking your inbox or online grade keeper to see what your child’s teacher has been up to.
